How to calculate a tip

Tip = bill × (tip % ÷ 100)Each person = (bill + tip) ÷ number of people

A fast way to tip 20% in your head: find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then double it. On a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80. For 15%, add half of the 10% figure: $6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60.

Worked example

Three friends share an $86.40 dinner and leave 20%. The tip is $17.28 and the total is $103.68, so each person pays $34.56. Choose "Round each share" and everyone pays $35.00, which leaves a slightly larger tip.

Typical U.S. tipping amounts

Customs vary by region and change over time. Outside the U.S., service is often included in the price and tips are smaller or not expected.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

The usual U.S. custom is to tip on the pre-tax amount, since tax isn't part of the service. Tipping on the total is fine too and adds only a little.

What if the restaurant already added a service charge?

Many restaurants add an automatic gratuity for large parties, often 18% to 20%. Check the receipt so you don't tip twice. You can still add more for great service.

How do I split a bill when people ordered different amounts?

This calculator splits evenly. For uneven bills, run each person's share separately with the same tip percentage, so everyone tips in proportion to what they ordered.

Do I need to tip at a counter or on a tablet screen?

Tipping at counter-service places is optional. Many people leave a small amount for good service, but it isn't expected the way it is at a table-service restaurant.
