How days are counted

By default the calculator counts the way a calendar does: from the start date up to, but not including, the end date. From Monday to Friday is 4 days. If you need both dates counted, for example for an event that runs through its last day, tick "Count the end date too" and 1 day is added.

Days = end date − start dateInclusive = end date − start date + 1

Worked example

From January 1, 2026 to July 4, 2026 is 184 days: 26 weeks and 2 days. 132 of those days fall Monday to Friday.

Weekdays and business days

The weekday count leaves out Saturdays and Sundays but not public holidays, because holidays depend on your country, state and employer. To find U.S. business days, subtract any federal holidays in the range. There are 11 federal holidays a year, including New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Common uses

  • Countdowns to a wedding, vacation or due date.
  • Notice periods and contract deadlines, such as 30 or 90 days.
  • Days left in a lease, subscription or warranty.
  • How long a project, trip or habit streak has run.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include the end date?

It depends on the question. "How many days until" usually excludes the end date. "How many days does the event last" usually includes both the first and last day.

Does this count leap years?

Yes. It uses the real calendar, so February 29 is counted in leap years.

What if my end date is before my start date?

The calculator swaps them and shows the span, with a note that the end date is earlier.

How do I count business days only?

Use the weekdays figure, then subtract any public holidays that fall in the range.
